The Philadelphia Insectarium and Butterfly Pavilion offer an up-close and personal experience with two floors of exciting educational exhibitions featuring an amazing collection of species from all over the world.
Exhibits
The museum is home to a shockingly wide variety of tropical and native insects and butterfly exhibits like the Butterfly Pavilion, Chrysalis Chamber, Insects & Arachnids, Tropical Plants, and Honey Bees.
The Butterfly Pavilion boasts 7,000 square feet of space filled with butterflies, tropical plants, a small fish pond, and tons of miniature waterfalls. Because of the tropical nature of all the live butterflies, the pavilion is always around 80 degrees, so be sure to dress accordingly so you don’t overheat!
The Chrysalis Chamber gives visitors a glimpse of the metamorphosis cycle. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see the magical transformation from chrysalis to butterfly through the glass. Insects and arachnids on display consist of an assortment of stick insects, praying mantids, tarantulas, scorpions, and so much more.
The tropical plants are gorgeous to look at and are a mere example of the luscious tropical rain forests where these species originate from. Find bright flowers like chenille tree flowers, passion fruit flowers, and yellow lollipop flowers among others.
Lastly, discover the honey bees and how they contribute to our ecosystem. Get the chance to see how they constantly move back and forth from their hive out to seek plants to pollinate through the glass, it’s a sight to see!
