History Of The Park
The land of Tacony Creek Park was once used as a hunting ground by the local Lenape people. When Europeans arrived, they began building mills and farms along the creek, removing most of the forest.
Around 1915, this forest was maintained by the City of Philadelphia as a parkland to preserve the safety of the stream. Half of the park today consists of trees with meadows and many species of birds and other species of animals.
For hikers, bicyclists and adventurers, the park features 3.2 miles of paved walkways. The path stretches through the park’s entire length and is open to the public from morning to late afternoon. In surrounding areas, such as Feltonville, Lawncrest, Juniata, Frankford, and Northwood, you can find over 10 different access points along the trail.
The historic park offers tourists pleasant, interactive events to take advantage of for families, such as nature and bird walks, planting, cleanups, block parties, and a variety of games.
The park has a number of opportunities to volunteer and serve the community. Those who wish to volunteer and expect to offer their helping with park cleanups, planting trees and shrubs, fundraising, and much more.
