The Small Town of Manayunk, PA

This article is presented by the slip and fall attorneys in Manayunk, PA, from Philly Slip and Fall Guys, a personal injury law firm with decades of experience fighting for justice and compensation for accident victims in Philly.

Manayunk, located on the lower end of Northwest Philadelphia, can be found in the middle of two prominent neighborhoods, Roxborough and Wissahickon, on the banks of the Schuylkill River. The neighborhood received its name from the Lenape Indians in the 17the century, given by William Penn, which the Lenape tribe translates Schuylkill River to “Manaiung,” meaning “river, aka place to drink.”

Despite its history as a working-class neighborhood, the area has been heavily gentrified in recent years. While the area still maintains a working-class population, it has changed to younger, upper to middle-class individuals and their families. In addition, Manayunk’s nightlife attracts people from all around the Delaware Valley, including visitors from other states or internationally.

History

Manayunk was historically a neighborhood in Roxborough Township, Philadelphia County, located south of the Wissahickon Creek and near the Schuylkill River. In 1685-1686, the property that would become Manayunk was purchased from William Penn and later passed to the Wigard Levering family.

In 1716, a large portion of the land was sold to Jacob, the son of the Levering family. Shortly after, on the north side of Green Lane, west of Silverwood Street, the younger Levering established the first house in Manayunk. In 1810, the burgeoning town was dubbed Flat Rock after a distinctive flat rock on the bridge’s lower side. Residents were not fond of the name, so with time and several meetings held, they changed it to the current spelling and pronunciation as it’s shown today, Manayunk.
