History

It all began with art collector Albert C. Barnes, a Philadelphian who appreciated fine arts and horticulture and wanted to share his experiences with others. In 1922, Barnes created the Barnes Foundation, dedicated to helping teach others how to see life through pieces of art.

Over the last three decades, Barnes has collected some of the most significant art pieces from all over the world, such as works of art from Picasso, Renoir, Matisse, and Cezanne.

Along with such art pieces, he also collected a variety of Native American jewelry, African masks, Greek antiques, and ornamental metalwork.

In 1922, in Merion, Pennsylvania, he bought a 12-acre art museum and hired the architect Paul Phillippe Cret to design a residence and museum. This was the first home of the Barnes Foundation, which later moved to Center City, Philadelphia in 2012.

Visit

Today, the Barnes Museum has a collection of exhibitions that rotate year-round, with new exhibits coming in monthly. Currently, museumgoers have the chance to discover breathtaking and exquisite paintings from Van Gogh, Picasso, Modigliani, including African sculptures, decorative arts, and decor.

The Museum provides online classes for those interested in expanding their knowledge of historical art pieces and visual representations over past centuries. Find classes like courses on modern art, life, and work through wood carving and major architectural monuments from the 20th century.

There is so much to learn and explore at the Barnes Museum, so when in Philly, don’t miss out on this educational opportunity that’ll enrich your mind and artist curiosity.
