Overbrook Park

The community of Overbrook Park is situated in the western section of Philadelphia in Philadelphia County in Pennsylvania. Some nearby neighborhoods include Wynnefield, Hestonville, Fairmont Park, Penn Wynne, Carroll Park, and Merion Station. The roadways that travel through the town include Lebanon Avenue, North 75th Street, Lansdowne Avenue, North 66th Street, Upland Way, and North 59th Street.

History

Early history reveals the land was originally part of Supio’s Farm and was founded in the 1940s. By the late 1950s, it had a large Jewish population. In 1948, the Conservative Congregation Beth T’fillah was founded but under the name of Overbrook Park Congregation. The neighborhood had approximately 7,200 residents in 1990, and most were Jewish, Irish, and Italian. By the end of 2000, it became 60% African American and most of the Jewish population had moved to the neighboring community of Penn Wynne.

The neighborhood still has remnants of the Jewish heritage. Some restaurants that still remain include:

  • a kosher bagel store
  • a kosher pizzeria
  • a kosher bakery

The Talmudical Yeshiva Of Philadelphia is located on Drexel Road. The school was founded in 1953 and consists of high school and college-level courses. The programs are geared toward Talmudic and Rabbinical studies, and graduates continue at other yeshivas or places that offer higher levels of Jewish learning.

Education

Another educational establishment within the community is the Science Leadership Academy at Beeber, located on Malvern Avenue. The high school is a college prep facility that opened in 2013. The main areas of focus include:

  • entrepreneurship

The Cobb’s Creek Golf Club, which is the location for the Karakung Course and the Olde Course, is situated in the southern region of the community. The property is home to both 18-hole courses for both visitors and residents to enjoy. The course is currently undergoing some much-needed renovations but is expected to reopen in 2024.

The neighborhood has 32,181 residents that help to make up the 11,265 households. The breakdown of ethnicities within the community include:
