The slip and fall attorneys in Strawberry Mansion, PA, at Philly Slip And Fall Guys, have provided the following details about the community’s history for your reading enjoyment.
The neighborhood of Strawberry Mansion is situated in the northern region of Philadelphia in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. The western border lies along East Fairmount Park and Schuylkill River. The communities that surround the neighborhood are Brewerytown, Glenwood, Allegheny West, and Parkwood. A few of the main roadways inside the community are Ridge Avenue, West Diamond Street, Cecil B. Moore Avenue, West Glenwood Avenue, and West Lehigh Avenue.
Originally the area was referred to as Summerville, and the home prices were higher than 85% of other communities in the city. The neighborhood’s current name came from the historical Strawberry Mansion. The house was built as a summer resort for Judge Wiliam Lewis around 1789. It was a restaurant from 1846 until 1867 that was known for its strawberries and cream. Since this time, the house has been home to many affluent families. Following its restoration by The Committee of 1926, a nonprofit group, it has served the community as a museum and hospitality venue.
The neighborhood’s history also includes hardship that led to its reputation as the city’s most dangerous area. The urban and economic decline from the 1950s and 1960s began the downward spiral for the community. Home prices plunged to the lowest in the city, and areas became neglected even by the police. Although property prices in the outer borders of the neighborhood have begun to climb, the area’s crime is an ongoing issue. Youth programs and increased park amenities have been increased to help redevelopment throughout the area to encourage improvement and neighborhood morale.
The community is home to several schools for the resident children to attend, such as:
- Strawberry Mansion High School
- Most Precious Blood School
- Richard R. Wright Elementary School
- Dobbins Technical High School
There are several places of worship for the community members. Some of these include:
- Gibson Temple Baptist Church
- Trinity Ame Church
- Love Zion Baptist Church
- St Martin de Porres Church
The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club serves as an integral part of the community. Ellis Ferrell founded the nonprofit in 1980. It provides the community with an alternative outdoor activity for the youth to learn life skills, have discipline, and increase academic excellence. Ferrell hopes to increase a sense of empowerment to the otherwise disenfranchised community.
As of 2000, the neighborhood had 22,562 residents. The racial makeup of these residents included the following:
- 1.6% white
- 1.9% Hispanic or Latino
- 94.0% African American
- 1.3% Asian
- 0.9% two or more races
- 0.3% other races
The median income for the neighborhood households was $23,600. The community’s unemployment rate was 9.1%, but only 36.6% of the population between 25 and 64 years old was employed. Some of the common occupations held by the working residents included:
- 14.8% administration
- 8.7% facilities
- 7.8% healthcare support
- 7.4% education
- 6.6% sales
- 5.5% food service
