U-Penn AKA The University of Pennsylvania
As America’s first university and one of the nine colonial colleges founded prior to the Declaration of Independence, the University of Pennsylvania in West Philadelphia, PA has a history that dates back to 1740 and shares many ties with the colonial city of Philadelphia and the birth of the United States as a nation.
Benjamin Franklin, Penn’s founder and first president, advocated an educational program that trained leaders in commerce, government, and public service, similar to a modern liberal arts curriculum.
Today, Penn university has four undergraduate schools as well as twelve graduate and professional schools. Among the university’s professional and graduate schools are the first school of medicine in North America, the first collegiate business school, and the first “student union” building and organization. Penn is also home to the oldest continuously functioning psychology department in North America and is where the American Medical Association was founded.
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
The University of the Sciences in West Philly has prepared students to be leaders and practitioners in the healthcare and science fields for nearly 200 years. Key to its distinctive education is a tradition of hands-on research and experiential learning that is evident in every graduate who has walked its campus.
Since its founding in 1821 as the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first college of pharmacy in North America, USciences has grown to more than 30 degree-granting programs from bachelor’s through doctoral degrees in the health sciences, bench sciences, and healthcare business and policy fields.
The university has an exchange agreement with the University of the Arts in Philadelphia that allows ten students from each university to take one course a semester at the other. The university also has an agreement with the New York University Study Abroad Program that will allow University of the Sciences students to study at NYU campuses in Asia, Africa and Europe for a semester or more.
St. Joe’s AKA Saint Joseph’s University
Saint Joseph’s University, also known as SJU or St. Joe’s, is a private Jesuit university founded by the Society of Jesus in 1851 in West Philadelphia and Lower Merion.
Saint Joseph’s University educates over 9,200 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students each year through the Erivan K. Haub School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Program of Professional & Liberal Studies, and the Haub Degree Completion Program.
From day one, undergraduate faculty advisers work with incoming students so that they may get the most out of their time at the school. Naturally, the core curriculum will push students to venture into new academic territory.
